How to calculate time and a half

Time and a half pay is one and a half times the employee's regular hourly rate. If an employee earns $20.00 per hour, their overtime rate is $30.00 per hour.

The basic formula is:

Overtime Pay = Regular Hourly Rate × 1.5 × Overtime Hours Worked

For example, at $20.00/hr with 5 overtime hours, overtime pay equals $150.00.

What counts as overtime?

Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), non-exempt employees must receive overtime pay for any hours worked over 40 in a workweek. Some states, such as California, also require daily overtime after 8 hours and double time after 12 hours in a day.

What is double time?

Double time is pay at twice the regular hourly rate. While not required by federal law, it is mandated by some state laws and union agreements. Common triggers include working more than 12 hours in a day or working a seventh consecutive day in a workweek.
